A symbol of purity, joy, love, sincerity, happiness and luck

In Germanic mythology, lily of the valley flowers have been associated with the humility and purity of the virgin goddess Ostara. In Christian legend, Eve’s tears turned into lilies of the valley as she was expelled from the Garden of Eden.

As well as being a sign of long life, these dainty blooms were a sign of love and protection in Celtic mythology.

In Victorian flower language, Lily of the Valley means “return to happiness” – either in happy memories, coming to terms after mourning, or starting over. All parts of the flower are poisonous – leaves, flowers, berries, stalks.

Lily of the valley may help treat fever, asthma, and memory loss. It is a good source of antioxidants that help combat free radicals in the body. Lily of the valley also has purgative and laxative properties that may help boost digestive health. Excessive use of this herb can cause abdominal pain and dehydration.

In some cases, the lily of the valley can symbolise sadness or pain due to a loss or death—which is why you may see these blooms often featured in funeral arrangements. Lily of the valley is also a symbol of serenity. This stems from their bell-like shape.
